Denver, CO – A deadly E. coli O157:H7 outbreak linked to onions served on McDonald’s Quarter Pounder burgers has left one dead and sickened 104 people across 14 states. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in collaboration with state health departments, confirmed slivered onions as the source of contamination after investigating McDonald’s restaurants, distribution centers, and onion suppliers. The outbreak has led to 34 hospitalizations and four cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe condition that can lead to kidney failure.
According to the FDA, McDonald’s removed the suspect onions from its menu in impacted states, and Taylor Farms, a supplier, issued a recall of yellow onions on October 22. The FDA reported that one sample of recalled onions tested positive for E. coli, although it was a different strain from the outbreak source. No further contaminated onions are expected to be available in stores.
McDonald’s has since reintroduced slivered onions from a different supplier, and no ongoing safety concerns have been reported.
