OAKLAND, CA When police pulled up a speeding Rolls Royce Ghost in Madera County, California, they found a young spider monkey inside. It was a strange scene. The startling discovery was made during a DUI arrest on Monday night, which resulted in the driver facing numerous penalties and the small (and really cute) primate receiving an unusual rescue.
DUI Stop Turns Into a Monkey Business
The luxury vehicle was pulled down by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) for driving too fast on northbound State Road 99, just north of Avenue 17. What started out as a routine traffic stop swiftly turned into an odd meeting.
The officer found a young spider monkey, thought to be around a month old, inside the car, according to CHP.
Arrested for DUI and More
The allegedly drunk motorist was taken into custody on several charges. Among these were possession of an exotic animal, possession of cannabis for sale, and DUI.
Primate ownership is prohibited in California, which adds a significant price to a driver’s already long list of issues. The little monkey, dressed in a onesie, is seen in CHP photos with multiple cell phones and plastic bags containing marijuana.
Monkey Moved to Oakland Zoo for Care
Animal Control took the young spider monkey after the arrest. The animal was quickly taken by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, who then sent it to the Oakland Zoo for proper care.
The newborn ape is currently receiving the required environment and medical care from the zoo, which is well-known for its work with endangered species.
The newborn spider monkey is doing well in his new home, and authorities are still looking into the matter.
