NEW CASTLE, Del. After a road rage incident that turned into a confrontation in many locations on Friday afternoon, Delaware State Police have arrested a 35-year-old Philadelphia man on several felony charges.
At around 3 p.m., troopers went to allegations of a dispute near North Dupont Highway and School Lane, and Wayne Burnett-Preyer was arrested. According to the investigation, Burnett-Preyer, operating a white Ford pickup truck, allegedly tailgated two 20-year-old guys, almost resulting in a collision, on Route 1 close to the Roth Bridge, where the dispute started.
The victims, who were from North Carolina and Texas, informed police that despite their several changes of lanes to let Burnett-Preyer pass, he persisted in his relentless pursuit. Burnett-Preyer allegedly blocked their vehicle with his truck at least twice throughout the pursuit, then got out of his own car to confront them. During the course of the chase, which went through Newport, Commons Boulevard, and East Basin Road, witnesses called 911.
After the victims requested help from a friend, a 19-year-old Newport resident, Burnett-Preyer allegedly started looking for all three of them. Burnett-Preyer was apprehended without incident when troopers found him at a Dash-In convenience shop on North Dupont Highway. When his truck was searched, 45.73 grams of marijuana and a loaded 9mm handgun were found beneath the driver’s seat.
After being taken to Troop 2, Burnett-Preyer was accused of several charges, including possessing a firearm while committing a felony and aggravated menacing. After being arraigned, he was freed on a secured bail of $4,200.
