Philadelphia man convicted in armed threat against elderly victim over parking space

The Philippines Officials stated Monday that a man from Philadelphia had been found guilty of unlawfully having a pistol and threatening a 76-year-old man during a parking space dispute in March 2023.

Following a jury trial, Yousef Purdie, 33, was convicted of breaching Pennsylvania’s Uniform Firearms Act (VUFA 6105). On March 12, 2023, outside Laundromat America in East Parkside, Purdie allegedly confronted the victim and demanded that he leave a parking spot, according to the prosecution. Purdie took out a gun and threatened the victim when he refused, then went back to his car.

When Philadelphia police arrived at the scene of the victim’s 911 call, they found the firearm in Purdie’s girlfriend’s purse. Judge Natasha Taylor-Smith sentenced Purdie, who was barred from owning firearms because of a previous conviction, to four to eight years in state prison on August 29, 2024.

District Attorney Larry Krasner praised the Elder Justice Unit and Assistant District Attorney Alexander Blumenthal for their efforts on the case, saying, “This conviction sends a clear message that threatening our most vulnerable citizens will not be tolerated.”

In the wake of the conviction, authorities also declared that grants for violence prevention that support elderly victims are now accepting applications. The Philadelphia Foundation encourages local groups that work with seniors to apply.

The Elder Justice Unit in Philadelphia reaffirmed its dedication to shielding elderly citizens from all sorts of abuse and violence.
