New Jersey’s Somerville.According to authorities, a 39-year-old Plainfield man was given a 364-day jail sentence on Friday for attacking a North Plainfield police officer after a wild dirt bike incident on Route 22 in April 2022.
Victor Ogando-Marte was found guilty of third-degree resisting arrest, third-degree aggravated assault on a law enforcement official, and disorderly individuals causing bodily harm with a lethal weapon. At sentencing, Somerset County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Tober stressed the importance of discouraging similar behavior.
On April 13, 2022, Ogando-Marte and a group of 15 to 20 other people were riding dirt motorcycles dangerously and illegally on Route 22 during rush hour. According to testimony, the group was impeding cars, doing stunts, and weaving through traffic close to the Rock Avenue intersection.
Ogando-Marte injured North Plainfield Police Officer James Kirchner by dragging him off the shoulder into the middle of the highway on his dirt bike after the officer tried to stop him. As more dirt bikers circled and attacked the officer, Ogando-Marte resisted being taken into custody, according to the police.
Good Samaritans, 911 callers, off-duty police, and responding backup all helped to defuse the situation. The other dirt riders left the scene and have not been recognized, but Ogando-Marte was taken into custody.
According to officials, the gravity of the assault and the dangers uncontrolled dirt bike riding poses to public safety are reflected in the punishment.
