Police Say Female Shoplifter Killed in High Speed Crash Suspected of Being DWI




Franklin, North Carolina. According to the Macon County Sheriff’s Office, a lady who was accused of shoplifting at a nearby Ingles Supermarket passed away Thursday night after escaping from the police and colliding with her car following a chase.

At at 10:16 p.m., Franklin Police Department officers were called to the grocery on Georgia Road after receiving a report of stealing. Officers noticed a strong alcohol smell emanating from the suspect’s car while they were chatting with her in the parking lot. The suspect refused to follow orders to open the car doors and locked them when they tried to look into it more.

Franklin Police and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office pursued the woman after she left the area in her car. The suspect lost control of the car, swerved off the road, and collided with a tree as the pursuit proceeded onto Georgia Road and then Wide Horizon Drive.

At the scene of the collision, the suspect was declared deceased. The crash is being investigated by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

In a statement, the sheriff’s office added, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased.”

After a suspected shoplifting call turned into a deadly collision, the fast-paced pursuit came to a tragic end.
