Port Jervis woman sentenced to nine years in arson case that endangered lives

New York’s Port Jervis.Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler said on Thursday that a Port Jervis woman who burned a house knowing people were inside had been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Earlier this year, Dawn Hulse, 53, admitted to starting several fires on the first floor of a two-family home on January 25, 2022, and entered a guilty plea to second-degree arson in Orange County Court. Five years of post-release supervision are part of the punishment.

Before starting the fires, Hulse blocked the door to the apartment and switched off the smoke alarm in the basement of the house, according to court records and statements. When Hulse put a can of bug repellent inside an oven and turned it on, the residents of the apartment upstairs heard an explosion.

The City of Port Jervis Police Department’s investigation, which led to Hulse’s arrest, was praised by District Attorney Hoovler. According to Hoovler, arson is a pernicious crime that seriously endangers both life and property. It is necessary to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable for their risky behavior.

Senior Assistant District Attorney Jessica Dovico prosecuted the case, and Hulse’s sentence is commensurate with the seriousness of the incident, which put other people’s lives in the building in jeopardy.
