Queens, New York. On Thursday, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz revealed that a man had been sentenced to 24 years in jail for shooting and killing his friend in December 2021 following a dispute about an unpaid bill.
Last month, Queens Village resident Hassan Dees, 35, entered a guilty plea to first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of Peter Johnson, 31, who was shot twice outside Dees’ residence on December 26, 2021. Five years of post-release monitoring is another component of the punishment.
Prosecutors claim that Johnson confronted Dees about the debt at the deli where he works. Following a brief debate, Johnson promised to carry on the discussion at Dees’ house once his shift was over. Dees grabbed a bag from the back of the deli, left work, and followed Johnson to his house on 212th Street shortly after Johnson departed.
When Johnson got close to Dees’ house at around 10:45 p.m., Dees shot him twice, striking him in the head and arm. Over two hours later, Johnson’s body was discovered in Dees’ driveway, unconscious. A nearby hospital declared him deceased.
In a statement, District Attorney Katz said, “This tragedy is a stark reminder of the devastation caused by illegal guns.”
