MINEOLA, N.Y. Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly said that a Queens man who targeted worshippers outside a Cedarhurst synagogue with antisemitic slurs and threats last October has been sentenced to 60 days in jail and three years of probation.
In November, Far Rockaway resident Alvin Tirado, 38, entered a guilty plea to aggravated harassment in accordance with a New York law that deals with hate crimes. Tirado was charged with verbally harassing and threatening a group departing from the Shaare Emunah, Sephardic Congregation of The Five Towns on October 4, 2024, and then assaulting another man in Lawrence.
The allegations state that at around 1:20 p.m., Tirado pulled over his vehicle close to Lincoln Street and Oakland Avenue and yelled antisemitic epithets including “The Jews are taking over” and “I’ll run all the kids over.” Additionally, he tried to start conflicts before leaving, barely avoiding a man and his kids.
Twenty minutes or so later, Tirado pulled to a stop in Lawrence, close to Barrett Road and Washington Avenue, and went up to someone else. He spat in the victim’s face, assaulted him, and made death threats.
Later that day, Tirado was taken into custody by Nassau County police in Far Rockaway. He grew violent during the arrest and slammed his shoulder into an officer’s ribcage.
DA Donnelly stated that violence and hate-fueled conduct have no place in Nassau County. The heinous acts of this defendant are intolerable. Our dedication to safeguarding Jewish community members from violence is unwavering.
