AMELIA, OH
— A local man claimed the $500,000 top prize from the Ohio Lottery’s popular scratch-off game, $500,000 Cashword, after buying the lucky ticket at a neighborhood gas station he frequently visits.
The winning ticket was purchased at Ohio Pike Marathon, located at 1723 East Ohio Pike in Amelia. The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, will take home $360,000 after federal and state taxes totaling 28%.
The player said $500,000 Cashword has long been his favorite lottery game. He realized he had won after counting the completed words on the ticket and had the clerk confirm the win at the counter.
The winner told lottery officials he plans to use the prize money to pay off debt and share some of the winnings with friends and family.
Ohio Pike Marathon, the retailer that sold the winning ticket, is a regular stop for the player, who said he’s familiar with the staff and grew up nearby.
More prizes remain in Cashword game
The $10 scratch-off game still has three top prizes of $500,000 remaining as of June 4, according to the Ohio Lottery. The game is one of several themed instant tickets that offer large fixed payouts.
Since 1974, the Ohio Lottery has contributed more than $33 billion to K-12 education throughout the state. Proceeds from all games go toward funding public schools through the Lottery Profits Education Fund.
