Salisbury man arrested after high-speed chase in stolen vehicle in Ocean City

Ocean City, Maryland. Following a high-speed pursuit through Ocean City involving a stolen vehicle and a coordinated police response utilizing cutting-edge equipment, a 38-year-old Salisbury man was taken into custody on Wednesday night.

A License Plate Reader (LPR) system detected the stolen car crossing the Route 50 Bridge into town, alerting the Ocean City Police Department to its existence. The driver, identified as Jamie Ruark, accelerated and collided with oncoming traffic on Baltimore Avenue when officers tried to pull over the car downtown.

Ruark proceeded to drive fast and in the incorrect direction on multiple streets, according to the police. After Ruark collided with an unoccupied parked automobile and severely damaged a fence, the pursuit came to an end in a condo parking lot.

Ruark escaped the car on foot and took refuge in a nearby condo building’s outdoor staircase. Officers used a drone equipped with Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) technology, which promptly found him and saw him throwing away something from the fourth floor. Later, the abandoned object was found and determined to be drug paraphernalia.

Ruark surrendered without incident once a perimeter had been created. There were no reports of injuries to Ruark, the officers, or the general public.

Michael Colbert, the interim chief, commended the officers’ work and the department’s use of technology during the arrest. In addition to the diligence and skill of our officers, this successful apprehension demonstrates the effectiveness of contemporary tools like drones and license plate reader devices, he said.
