Sergeant John Michener retires after 25 years of service to Willingboro community

WILLINGBORO, N.J. — After 25 years of public service, Sergeant John Michener, a lifelong Willingboro resident and a devoted member of the Willingboro Police Department for more than 20 years, has resigned.

Prior to joining the police department in 2000, Michener started his career in 1993 as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician. He has served in a variety of capacities over the years, including Honor Guard member, K-9 Handler, Accident Investigator, Police Academy Instructor, and Youth Police Academy Instructor.

In addition to being a member of a team sent to help New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, he received recognition for his contributions to community initiatives like DARE, LEAD, and National Night Out. After being promoted to sergeant in 2017, Michener oversaw the Street Crimes Unit, Accident Unit, and K-9 Unit. By establishing the Willingboro Police K-9 Association to assist the unit’s equipment and training needs, he demonstrated leadership beyond his professional responsibilities.

Among his many honors, Michener received the Willingboro VFW’s Officer of the Year award for delivering a baby in a life-threatening circumstance, which demonstrated his dedication to helping others.

The department commended his work and dedication, emphasizing how he embodied their fundamental values of commitment, integrity, and honor.
