Baltimore, Maryland.Authorities said that a 61-year-old man has been taken into custody in relation to a series of arson incidents in Baltimore’s Central District. The suspect, Bernard Stepney of Baltimore, is charged with starting fires in several different parts of the city.
Stepney purposefully set fire to five locations, including two mailboxes in the 400 block of Cathedral Street and the 300 block of West Mulberry Street, investigators found. The 400 block of East Fayette Street, the 500 block of East Baltimore Street, and the 500 block of West Franklin Street were among the other areas impacted.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant when Stepney was connected to the incidents by physical evidence and CCTV footage. Stepney was found and safely taken into custody by a Central District patrol officer at around 8:30 p.m. on December 3, 2024. After being brought to the Central Booking Intake Facility, he was accused with first-degree malicious burning, second-degree arson, and other fire-related felonies.
The Baltimore City and County Hazardous Device Team, Howard County Fire Marshals K-9, BCIC, ATF, and the Baltimore City Fire Investigation Bureau were among the agencies that worked together on the investigation. Investigators were able to link the occurrences and quickly resolve the case because to the coordination, according to authorities.
