A sex offender in Florida was allegedly captured on video following a 10-year-old girl and her mother around a parking lot after telling the girl she was “so beautiful.”
Kevin Hurley, 60, allegedly spoke to the girl while visiting a Home Depot in Miami on July 4. Although the CCTV film is silent, he is said to have chatted with them while making a merchandise return.
“I love your Mickey ears,” said the man, “and I think you’re too big to be in that shopping cart.”
“I think you’re so beautiful,” he added, according to a police report.
According to a police report, Hurley’s “erratic” conduct drew the mother’s attention, prompting her to photograph him.
“After pacing the aisle at least three times, [Hurley] attempted to approach the victim from behind but was deterred and resumed walking around the area before leaving the store,” according to a police report.
Hurley may be seen driving his car through the parking lot, pursuing the girl and her mother. Footage also shows him reversing his black car to follow the accused victims as they approached their vehicle. The girl’s mother, aware that she was being followed, did not get into her car, and the tape showed Hurley, who had spent many minutes waiting at a stop sign in front of the mother and kid, being challenged by a guy pointing in the direction of the accused victims.
Hurley is on the Sunshine State’s sex offender list. He was convicted in 2014 of sexual battery and molestation of a child aged 12 to 15. He was sentenced to five years in prison but was freed on probation in 2017.
He is now charged with felony aggravated stalking of a juvenile. According to records, he is currently in custody.
According to Law&Crime’s Jesse Weber and attorney John Clune, Hurley seemed to be wearing an ankle monitor when he allegedly communicated with the child.
“It’s a particularly bold individual,” Clune added. “To do this in front of the child’s parent is really unusual and to make a statement like ‘I think you’re so beautiful’ in front of other adults … this is somebody who is not engaging in the more secretive grooming behavior that we usually see from somebody who is a child sex offender.”
Hurley is barred from making unsupervised contact with a minor.
