Sherrill and Ciattarelli split on Trump’s Iran strikes in early clash in New Jersey governor’s race

Trenton, New Jersey.Republican former Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli and Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill responded to President Donald Trump’s recent military attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities in starkly different ways, setting the stage for New Jersey’s 2025 gubernatorial contest.

Disparate opinions on the use of military action and the role of presidential power issues that are surfacing early in the campaign are reflected in the responses, which were given hours apart.

Former Navy helicopter pilot and federal prosecutor Sherrill blasted Trump for initiating strikes without first obtaining congressional clearance. “President Trump’s decision to order these strikes tonight without first seeking legal authorization from Congress, as required by the Constitution, deeply concerns me,” she added in a formal statement.

She cautioned against making the same mistakes twice and underlined the constitutional need for congressional participation in military action. However, the majority of academics believe that the strike was kept under wraps to prevent leaks and did not require congressional sanction.

She said that this is particularly crucial in light of the bad choices that resulted in 20 years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan without furthering the objectives of the US and its allies.

Ciattarelli responded directly by praising the strikes and Trump’s leadership and claiming that the military action was warranted. In a social media image, President Trump said that his decision to destroy Iran’s nuclear program was the right one.

Israel would be seriously threatened by a nuclear-armed Iran, which may also cause more instability in the Middle East.

“God bless our American military personnel for their skill and courage in carrying out this mission,” Ciattarelli said, praising American service forces.

With Ciattarelli focusing on national security and swift action and Sherrill on process and diplomacy, the opposing remarks underscore the two candidates’ wider ideological differences.

Amid continuing tensions on a national and international level, both parties are vying for control of the state’s executive office, making the 2025 governor election anticipated to be closely monitored.
