LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC

– A South Carolina teacher has been arrested after allegedly assaulting two students in separate incidents, raising concerns about safety within the school environment. Jermaine Cornelius Singletary, 51, a teacher at Irmo Middle School in Columbia, surrendered to authorities on Wednesday morning, facing serious charges related to his actions in the classroom.

Allegations of Assault: A Disturbing Pattern Emerges

According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began after reports surfaced about two incidents involving Singletary. Sheriff Jay Koon explained, “When we became aware of these two incidents, we opened our investigation and determined Singletary allegedly assaulted two students on two separate occasions.” The incidents reportedly occurred several months apart, with the first incident in March and the second in October.

In March, Singletary allegedly struck a student because he believed the student had touched his head. The October incident involved a different student who retrieved an assignment that Singletary had thrown in the trash, which reportedly led to the alleged assault. Importantly, neither incident was reported to school administrators by Singletary, as noted by the sheriff’s office.

Singletary has been booked into the Lexington County Detention Center on two counts of third-degree assault. As the investigation continues, the local community grapples with the implications of these events, highlighting the need for open communication and trust between students, teachers, and school administration.

Such incidents can have lasting effects, not just on the involved students but on the overall atmosphere in educational settings.
