Should ICE Agents Be Allowed to Wear Masks? It Depends Whom You Ask.

In an interview that aired on ABC on Sunday, Mayor Karen Bass said that immigration sweeps by masked federal officials have contributed to the reign of terror in Los Angeles.

Regardless of their legal status, many immigrants in Southern California have hunkered down in their houses out of fear of being arrested and deported. They have missed jobs, church activities, and important life events like their children’s graduations. Additionally, according to Ms. Bass, a dangerous encounter is made even more terrifying by the practice of some Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel hiding their faces behind black masks.

In a different CBS interview on Sunday, Ms. Bass stated that these masked individuals arrive in unmarked vehicles, leap out of them brandishing firearms, and arrest people. It appears to the typical citizen to be a brutal kidnapping. That is something you should never have.

In a letter to ICE acting director Todd Lyons earlier this month, 14 Democratic senators stated that agents snatching people off the street while wearing plain clothes and masks is an obvious attempt to avoid responsibility for the agents’ actions and exacerbate the chaos and fear of immigration raids.

In a CBS interview on Sunday, Mr. Lyons stated that while he did not advocate for agents to wear masks, he would nevertheless permit them to do so if it is a necessary measure to protect them and their families.

According to federal officials, the facial covers assist shield ICE agents from doxxing, which is the practice of sharing personal information online, such as a home address or contact data.
