SIOUX FALLS, S.D.According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, a Sioux Falls man who pleaded guilty to possessing a stolen firearm was sentenced on Wednesday to two years and three months in federal prison.
U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schrier sentenced 29-year-old Tanner Lee Hershman to 27 months in prison and three years of supervised release. A $100 special charge to the Federal Crime Victims Fund was also mandated to be paid by him.
The case, according to authorities, started with a domestic disturbance report on December 21, 2023, in which the victim claimed Hershman, a convicted criminal, had assaulted her and had a pistol. Later, police found a stolen Glock Model 44 semiautomatic handgun in the home’s garage.
According to an inquiry, on October 8, 2023, Hershman took the gun from a car. He was charged with both felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen handgun in April 2024. In August, he entered a guilty plea to the stolen firearm allegation.
The case was tried under the auspices of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative that aims to decrease violent crime by fostering community and law enforcement cooperation. The inquiry was carried out by the Sioux Falls Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations.
When Hershman was sentenced, the U.S. Marshals Service took him into jail right away.
