Newark, New JerseyA scam in which unique sports items disappeared from mailrooms and reappeared for financial gain was exposed by a New Jersey postal worker who betrayed trust. After confessing to his crimes, he now faces jail time and a heavy price tag.
Caught in the Act: How the Scheme Began
The 34-year-old Bronx resident Shelby Dozier entered a guilty plea to charges of stealing valuables from the USPS while she was employed as a sorting clerk. As the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey described the scope of his thefts, he confessed.
Dozier’s act involved more than simply regular mail; he specifically targeted expensive goods. At least ten parcels containing sports memorabilia and rare trade cards that were sent to a Clifton, New Jersey, consignment auction shop were stolen by him.
A Short-Lived Career With Long-Term Consequences
Shortly after starting work at the Clifton Main Post Office in August 2022, Dozier started to engage in illicit conduct. By September, important goods that were headed to the auction house began to vanish. The company, which is well-known for its international sports collectibles industry, unintentionally became the ideal target.
Dozier intercepted and stole artifacts between September and December 2022, then sold them to collectors’ shops and private purchasers. Due to the substantial financial harm, he agreed to reimburse the victims $108,692.49 in total.
Facing Punishment
Dozier entered a guilty plea to mail theft, a federal violation that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, which is double the amount he made.
On April 22, he will be sentenced, and his future will be determined.
