South Carolina Flood Advisory: Heavy Rain Continues, Road Closures Reported

Columbia, SC – Central South Carolina faces flood warnings as heavy rain continues, with some areas reporting up to 10 inches south of Interstate 20. Flood advisories are in place through early Thursday, and travelers are warned to avoid flooded roadways and follow detour signs, particularly around I-20.

According to the National Weather Service, flooding is affecting low-lying areas across Columbia, Sumter, and other nearby cities. Additional rain is expected to bring totals up to 2.5 inches in the region, leading to minor to moderate flooding, particularly in roadways and urban areas with poor drainage. Drivers should take extra precautions, avoiding water-covered streets, as 12 inches of fast-moving water can easily push vehicles off the road.

The heavy rain will persist into Thursday morning, with showers tapering off by the afternoon. Friday’s forecast shows a slight chance of morning showers, followed by partly cloudy skies and temperatures reaching around 72°F. This improvement in weather brings a break from the stormy conditions, though minor flooding could persist due to waterlogged soil.

Looking ahead to Veterans Day weekend, Columbia will see mostly sunny skies on Saturday, with highs around 72°F and lows near 53°F, offering a pleasant respite for outdoor events and celebrations. Sunday continues this trend with mostly cloudy conditions and temperatures reaching 71°F.

Stay informed by checking local weather updates and avoid unnecessary travel in flood-affected areas until waters recede. Columbia residents should monitor local advisories and plan routes carefully, as additional rain in saturated areas could still lead to hazardous conditions.
