South Carolina Man Slapped with Charges after Authorities Discover Emaciated Mother whose Wounds were Infested with Maggots

Authorities in South Carolina have upgraded charges against a 68-year-old man following the unfortunate passing of his dependent he was accused of neglecting.

A murder charge has been filed against Salvador Gonzales Rivera by the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities responded to a residence on Hoss Road after receiving a request for a welfare check on Tuesday.

An 88-year-old woman was discovered by deputies lying in a bed surrounded by her own urine and feces, according to an affidavit.

Rivera informed authorities that his mother had been confined to her bed for about four weeks and had not received proper medical attention for approximately eight months.

Deputies noted that the woman seemed to be malnourished and was promptly transported to the hospital by EMS. According to the affidavit, medical professionals diagnosed her with a fractured hip and bed sores that were unfortunately infested with maggots. Additionally, she was severely lacking in fluids and appeared emaciated.

The affidavit states that Rivera was the only person responsible for taking care of his mother and was present when she passed away.

Consuelo Gonzalez, from Puerto Rico, has been identified as the victim, as confirmed by Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal. Consuelo passed away on Wednesday while receiving treatment in the intensive care unit at the hospital.

Rivera was taken into custody and held at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.
