South Dakota Launches Free College Application Period for October and November 2024

South Dakota is taking significant steps to enhance access to higher education by unveiling the annual Free College Application Period, which will run from October 1 to November 30, 2024. This program enables high school seniors to submit applications to the state’s public universities and technical colleges without incurring any application fees, including Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.

A collaborative initiative involving the South Dakota Board of Regents, the South Dakota Board of Technical Education, and the South Dakota Department of Education is underway, focusing on the application process for higher education. This effort highlights the state’s dedication to ensuring that higher education is within reach and financially manageable for every student.

“Access and affordability are central to our mission,” stated Nathan Lukkes, Executive Director of the BOR. “We aim to boost the number of students interested in pursuing higher education in South Dakota. The free application period removes a financial barrier and encourages students to explore all the opportunities available at our public universities and technical colleges.”

Various post-secondary institutions in South Dakota, such as Black Hills State University, Dakota State University, Lake Area Technical College, Mitchell Technical College, Northern State University, South Dakota Mines, South Dakota State University, Southeast Technical College, University of South Dakota, and Western Dakota Technical College, are actively involved in this initiative. Every institution provides distinct routes to achievement, aligning with the state’s objective of boosting higher education participation.

“By making it more accessible for students to apply, we’re fostering greater participation in higher education,” said Joseph Graves, Secretary of Education. “We know that a more educated workforce strengthens South Dakota’s economy, and we want our students to realize the career opportunities available to them through higher education right here at home.”
