Police Officer Enrique Martinez was answering what began as an ordinary call when he faced a violent encounter that would ultimately claim his life. As details emerge, a clearer picture unfolds of the courage Martinez and his fellow officers showed in the face of a well-armed and dangerous suspect. The unfolding events reveal a scene of grit and sacrifice that underscores the risks officers willingly face to keep Chicago’s streets safe.

As Officer Enrique Martinez faced his final moments, his courage shone brighter than the darkness around him. In times of loss like this, we’re reminded of the words in Isaiah 41:10:

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Martinez’s sacrifice was not in vain, as his bravery and dedication to protecting his community will be remembered, upheld by the strength of God’s promise to never abandon those who walk in the path of righteousness.

Responding to a Routine Call

On the evening of November 4, Officer Enrique Martinez and his partner, Officer Nunez, responded to a call at the 8200 block of South Ingleside Avenue, a location familiar to many officers working in Chicago’s more challenging neighborhoods.

Although the call turned out to be unfounded, the officers’ alertness led them to spot a suspicious vehicle nearby—a black Ford Escape, double-parked with a Wisconsin temporary license plate, obstructing traffic. They quickly identified additional red flags: fraudulent registration and a broken taillight.

Remaining vigilant, Officers Martinez and Nunez approached the vehicle to investigate, knowing well the risks involved in every stop.

A Traffic Stop Turns Deadly

As the officers moved in, they observed three individuals in the car: a young driver, Darion McMillian in the passenger seat, and a third person asleep in the back. It was Officer Martinez’s readiness to address even minor infractions that brought him face-to-face with McMillian, who was cradling a backpack close to his chest.

When the officers directed him to show his hands, McMillian refused, clutching the backpack and ignoring commands. In an instant, he drew a firearm from inside the bag and opened fire, striking Officer Martinez and the driver. Martinez was hit five times and collapsed on the street. His bravery in the line of duty, even in these final moments, remains a testament to his commitment.

McMillian’s Desperate Escape

With Officer Martinez critically wounded and the driver incapacitated, McMillian pushed the driver out and seized control of the vehicle. At this point, Officer Brink, who had arrived to assist, attempted to pull McMillian out, grabbing his jersey as McMillian put the car in reverse. Officer Brink’s attempt to contain McMillian highlights the dedication Chicago officers bring to every call, no matter the circumstances.

McMillian reversed at high speed, causing Officer Brink to fall, discharging one round as he hit the ground. The open driver’s door struck a parked vehicle, inflicting further damage before McMillian lost control and collided with another car. Realizing he could no longer escape by vehicle, he abandoned the car and fled on foot, leaving behind the third individual still asleep in the back seat.

A Citywide Search and Capture

In a coordinated effort, officers and detectives used surveillance footage to track McMillian’s path, ultimately locating him in the 8000 block of South Drexel Avenue. Footage captured him slipping into a residence, where he attempted to remove an electronic monitoring bracelet in a desperate attempt to avoid capture. Police later found him fleeing into a backyard, scaling a fence before reaching Maryland Avenue. Officers swiftly moved in, apprehending him while he still wore his distinctive red and white Air Jordans.

When he was finally taken into custody, officers discovered suspected cannabis and crack cocaine on him. The dedication of Chicago law enforcement officers ensured that McMillian was stopped before he could further threaten the community.

Recovered Evidence: Unmasking the Threat

Two extensive searches of the Ford Escape revealed a trove of incriminating evidence. Officers recovered a .40 caliber firearm with an automatic switch from the front passenger seat—indicating a readiness for violence—as well as multiple shell casings both inside and around the vehicle. Additionally, baby bottles containing suspected codeine and a backpack under a coat further illustrated the level of threat officers had faced that night.

McMillian’s Criminal History and Escalating Charges

McMillian’s record reflects a troubling history with the law. Authorities confirmed that his charges following the shooting include first-degree murder of a police officer, attempted murder, and various weapons-related offenses. Prior to this deadly incident, he was already facing two felony charges in Will County and had only recently been released from a prison term for aggravated firearm discharge in 2019.

Despite past incarcerations, McMillian continued to pose a significant risk, and the actions of Officer Martinez and his colleagues that night underscore the challenges and courage inherent in police work.
