Stamford, Connecticut Early Saturday morning, the Stamford Fire Department reported that a resident who had jumped from a window to escape a fire at a three-story row house on Clinton Avenue suffered life-threatening injuries.
Within three minutes of their arrival at 17 Clinton Avenue at 5:15 a.m., firefighters discovered smoke and flames streaming from the first-floor windows of an end apartment in the multi-family building. Firefighters were notified by neighbors that a person was trapped at a back window. The situation was so dire that the man sprang from the window before rescuers could set up a ground ladder.
Firefighters treated the injured person at the back of the building while combating the fire from the front. More resources were sent to the location when a second alert was triggered in response to reports of more missing occupants. No further residents were discovered after a search of the building and nearby apartments.
In less than 20 minutes, the fire was contained to the original unit. For two more hours, firefighters stayed on the scene to do salvage and overhaul operations. Emergency medical personnel took the injured occupant to Stamford Hospital, where they are still in critical condition.
Fifty people responded, including two truck companies, a heavy rescue company, five engine companies, and both on-duty deputy chiefs. During the operation, no firefighters suffered any injuries.
The cause of the fire is being looked into by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office. The Stamford Police Department, Stamford EMS, and other fire department departments contributed additional assistance.
First and second alarm companies worked together to accomplish this, according to Deputy Chief and Incident Commander Matt Palmer. The fire was swiftly extinguished and the damage to the unit of origin was limited because of everyone’s combined efforts.
