VAT and STERLINGWhen Hanaphorn Waltrip scratched her 20X the Money ticket from the Virginia Lottery and found she had won $1 million, it was a moment that changed her life.
Waltrip bought the lucky ticket at Wegmans in Sterling on Columbia Place. Instead of getting the entire $1 million reward over 30 years, she opted for the one-time cash option of $625,000 before taxes. The Virginia Lottery will give a $10,000 bonus to the merchant that sold the winning ticket.
In the 20X the Moneygame, this win is the fifth top prize to be won; one top prize remains unclaimed. The odds of winning the highest prize in the $10 scratch-off game are 1 in 1,958,400, and the rewards range from $10 to $1 million.
Waltrip, who resides in Loudoun County, which last year earned more than $23.6 million in Lottery cash for K–12 education, intends to utilize her windfall to feed her family and pay her expenses. In Fiscal Year 2024, the Lottery spent more than $934 million on education throughout the state.
