Following a stabbing at a high school in New Jersey, one kid is in critical condition and another is under arrest.
A press release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office states that on Tuesday, April 8, just before 11:00 a.m., an officer assigned to Fort Lee High School made an emergency radio contact to local authorities to report a stabbing.
According to a news release from the Fort Lee Police Department, the officer was inside the school at the time of the incident, and the school was “immediately” put on lockdown.
When the stabbing occurred, Superintendent Robert Kravitz informed families via message that it had occurred “within the school building.”
Although there was “no immediate threat to the safety of our school community,” residents were advised not to visit the school, according to a message shared on Facebook by state senator Holly Schepisi.
When police arrived, they discovered a male student who had been stabbed “multiple times,” according to a news release from the prosecutor’s office.
“The Officer, along with the assistance of school staff, applied immediate first aid to the juvenile victim, who was soon after transported to an area hospital and survived,” the police department’s news release stated.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the victim, whose name was withheld, was classified in critical but stable condition.
According to the Fort Lee Police Department, “the assailant, another student, was taken into custody.” The news announcement from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office stated that the attacker was 16 years old, but it did not provide the attacker’s name.
An investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect were in a “school restroom and engaged in an altercation when the suspect stabbed the victim several times with a knife,” according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.
“The victim was stabbed in the neck, abdomen, back, and arm, causing serious injuries,” according to the press release.
According to the press statement, the defendant was placed in protective care and charged with juvenile delinquency, especially first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, third-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

After an initial on-scene inquiry, security procedures were relaxed, but kids were dismissed early, according to the Fort Lee Police Department.
“Out of an abundance of caution, there will be an extra police presence in and around the High School tomorrow, however there is no further threat that we are aware of at this time, and no other suspects are being sought.”
