Suspect arrested in Canada extradited to New Jersey for 1997 cold case murder

Bridgewater, New Jersey According to authorities, a 60-year-old Canadian man has been extradited to New Jersey to face charges in the 1997 murder of Tamara Tammy Tignor, a woman from Newark whose body was found in Bridgewater on a dirt road.

Robert A. Creter, of Winnipeg, Canada, was arrested by Canadian authorities in June 2024 after DNA evidence connected him to the decades-old murder, according to Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald. Creter is now being imprisoned at the Somerset County Jail after being extradited to the United States on November 26, 2024.

Tignor’s body was found by Bridgewater police on a dirt access road close to Washington Valley Park on November 4, 1997. Despite persistent attempts by county and municipal authorities, the case remained unresolved for years after an autopsy determined her death was a homicide.

The case was reexamined in January 2023 as part of the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant and the Garden State Cold Case Network. Using the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), advanced DNA testing carried out in April 2023 matched evidence from the crime scene to Creter. In 2002, investigators discovered that Creter had moved to Canada.

Creter was taken into custody by Canadian police on June 27, 2024, after murder charges were approved in May 2023. Creter was brought back to New Jersey last week following months of court hearings.

Creter is currently awaiting a detention hearing after being charged with first-degree murder in connection with Tignor’s death.
