ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A 40-year-old Orlando man died Monday after being ejected from his SUV following a crash on I-95 North in St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the crash report, the SUV was traveling north in the left lane of I-95 around 10:15 p.m. Monday, with six adult travelers.
The 57-year-old driver from Orlando lost control and spun out, crashing the SUV into a railing. Troopers say the impact flipped the SUV onto its roof.
During the incident, one of the backseat passengers was ejected and landed on the highway, where he was struck by a passing pickup truck, according to authorities. He died of his injuries.
The SUV’s driver and five other passengers sustained minor injuries. Troopers said that only one of the passengers was wearing a seat belt.
According to the report, neither the woman driving the truck that hit the victim on the highway nor her two passengers were injured. All three were wearing seatbelts. Troopers didn’t reveal their ages.
I-95 was closed in both directions for many hours early Tuesday morning but reopened before 6 a.m.
