Teaneck woman charged with stealing $36K from Bergen County non-profit

TEANECK, N.J.

— A Teaneck woman has been charged with theft by deception, forgery, and impersonation after allegedly stealing approximately $36,000 from a Bergen County non-profit organization, officials announced Friday.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, 57-year-old Karen A. McEvoy was arrested following a joint investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit and the Teaneck Police Department.

Authorities say McEvoy, a volunteer at the unidentified non-profit, wrote unauthorized checks from the organization’s bank account and deposited them into her own personal account. Investigators allege she forged the signatures of another member of the organization and assumed their identity to carry out the transactions.

The investigation began in February when Teaneck police contacted the Prosecutor’s Office with information about possible financial misconduct. Detectives determined that McEvoy fraudulently obtained the funds over a period of time using deceptive methods.

Charges and court proceedings

McEvoy was arrested on Friday and charged with third-degree theft by deception, third-degree forgery, and third-degree impersonation. She was released pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

The case remains under investigation by both agencies, with further updates to follow as court proceedings advance.
