Teen killed in collision with municipal truck in Lower Township

New Jersey’s Lower Township.Authorities in Cape May County said Tuesday that a 17-year-old boy had died in a collision on Bayshore Road between a dirt bike and a Lower Township municipal trash truck.

Lower Township Police responded to a 911 call of an accident along Atlantic Avenue in the Villas portion of the township on January 14, 2025, at around 11:34 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the dirt bike was struck by the municipal trash truck as it was turning right onto East Atlantic Avenue while heading north on Bayshore Road. On the northbound shoulder of the road, the teenager had been traveling south.

Investigators were informed by the truck driver that they observed the dirt bike coming at a high speed and tried to stop, but were unable to avoid the collision. Witnesses attested to the truck’s sluggish speed—roughly five miles per hour—and its complete halt at the moment of contact.

As part of the ongoing investigation, Lower Township Police and the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Crash Investigation Unit are examining CCTV footage and scene data.

Until the family is notified, authorities have not disclosed the teen’s identity.
