TNA, MEMPHIS After allegedly attempting to kidnap a 7-year-old girl from her bed and returning to her house weeks later, a 19-year-old male in Tennessee was placed under arrest. Because the young child resisted the culprit and escaped both times, the terrifying occurrence has put the town on edge.

Abduction Attempt on November 6th

At around 4:05 a.m. on November 6, 2024, Memphis Police responded to a call at a Johnson Avenue apartment complex. Her daughter had awakened her up, according to the victim’s mother, who said that someone had taken her from her bed and attempted to carry her outside. The child courageously retaliated, escaping her kidnapper and sprinting home.

The victim claims that an unidentified man went into her room, took hold of her, and covered her mouth.

According to the probable cause affidavit, she reported that an unidentified Black male with a slim build, probably curly hair or a hairstyle, [wearing] a dark-colored sweatshirt and black leggings, entered her room while she was in bed and seized her, covering her mouth.

After being forced to the ground by the suspect, the girl was able to escape and flee back home after being taken to a nearby basketball park.

Investigators were able to verify the victim’s account of events using surveillance footage, which showed a man wearing black pants and a brown hoodie.

The Return of the Suspect

The suspect was once more seen prowling outside the victim’s house on November 24, 2024, a few weeks later. Juan Cathey, a neighbor who knew the suspect from the earlier incident, saw him about 5:40 a.m. The suspect was standing close to the scene of the kidnapping, wearing the same clothes.

The suspect said his aunt lived next door, but Cathey, who knew the area well, questioned him. According to the affidavit, Juan [Cathey] said, “No, your aunt does not stay there.” Suspicious of the man’s narrative, Cathey pulled him toward the security cameras. Cathey was able to recognize the offender later in a police lineup after gaining a closer look at him.

Investigation and Arrest

Jeremiah Smith was arrested as a result of the identification and charged with particularly aggravated kidnapping. Smith is now being jailed on a $150,000 bond after being arrested last week. The date of his preliminary hearing is January 15, 2025.

Smith s capture was made possible by the quick thinking of a neighbor and the diligent work of local authorities. The neighborhood is still on edge after the horrific experience, and the inquiry is still ongoing.
