EL PASO, TX: Border Patrol agents have discovered a tunnel that runs from Mexico into the center of El Paso, Texas. Agents discovered a man-made route connecting Ciudad Ju rez to the U.S. storm drain system on January 9, 2025. This recent event demonstrates the ongoing attempts to stop smuggling along the border between the United States and Mexico.
Discovery of the Tunnel
Agents from the El Paso Station Confined Space Entry Team discovered the startling discovery while examining a storm drain early on January 9.
The tunnel from Mexico into the United States was discovered by the agents around 1:15 a.m. after they removed a metal plate that had been concealing a 36-by-36-inch hole.
Tunnel Specifications and Features
It was discovered that the tunnel was around six feet high and four feet broad, with wooden beams supporting its structure. Agents found that the tunnel included ventilation and lighting systems, which are common elements used to support smuggling operations.
Transnational criminal organizations most likely used this tunnel to get around authorized points of entry into the US.
Response and Investigation
“We are proud of the Agents who discovered this smuggling infrastructure used by transnational criminal organizations,” said Anthony Scott Good, El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent, in response to the finding. Our agents relentlessly seek and survey the whole El Paso Sector, covering every square mile. Together with our allies, we are dedicated to looking into these illegal actions and prosecuting individuals who put lives in danger in these dangerous settings and avoid the proper channels for entering the United States.
The FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and Mexican authorities are currently investigating the tunnel.
The current probe also involves the U.S. Consulate General in Ciudad Jurez.
“The United States Border Patrol’s discovery of this tunnel and the subsequent disruption of Transnational Criminal Organizations using it is an example of the strong partnerships between agencies in El Paso and Ciudad Ju rez, working together to secure our shared border and protect our communities,” said FBI Special Agent in Charge John Morales, underscoring the significance of cross-border cooperation.
Authorities are committed to finding the culprits and stopping such unlawful activities while the inquiry is ongoing.
