Texas Flood Survivors Recount Night of Terror at Waterfront Campgrounds

A 65-acre peaceful campground on the shady banks of the Guadalupe River, it was marketed as a waterfront retreat. However, the HTR TX Hill Country R.V. Park & Campground is now little more than a desolate area of gravel and dirt and the eerie remnants of foundations where opulent cabins once stood, a week after floodwaters swept over the riverbanks.

The ranch, located in Central Texas on the boundary between Kerrville and Ingram, was nearly destroyed by the intensity of the Independence Day floods. Whole cabins had their foundations torn apart. The proprietor of a nearby RV park watched in terror as those trapped inside cried for assistance as they lurched downstream.

According to interviews, local news reports, and social media posts, at least 28 individuals were verified deceased or reported missing during the flash flood, making the half-mile area that the two campers occupied one of the deadliest locations along the 250-mile river.

More attention has been paid to other areas of destruction in the early hours of July 4, particularly Camp Mystic, a summer camp farther upriver where six people are still missing and 27 campers and staff have been confirmed deceased.

The number of persons that went missing from the campground during the flood has not been made public by HTR, the corporation that owns it.
