Texas Panhandle Weather Alert: Record Heat and Fire Danger Through Saturday

Texas’s LubbockHigh temperatures in Lubbock and the surrounding areas are in the mid-80s, setting a new record for warmth in the Texas Panhandle. A Red Flag Warning for fire hazard has been issued till 6 p.m. Friday due to the unusually warm weather, dry air, and gusty winds.

The Lubbock National Weather Service (NWS) reports that southwest winds of up to 25 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph will make wildfires more likely, particularly in places with dry brush and grass. It is advised that residents refrain from burning outdoors and use caution around anything that can start a fire.

Lows tonight will be in the mid-40s, and temperatures will continue to be warmer than usual. Breezy conditions are expected to last into Sunday, and the weekend forecast predicts further above-normal highs that will reach the upper 70s to mid-80s.

A cold front is predicted to arrive early next week, bringing with it the possibility of precipitation and lower temperatures. Keep abreast of road conditions and fire safety advisories, particularly along I-27 and US-84, where wind-driven dust may affect visibility and travel.
