Toms River schools considers 27-acre land sale in North Dover to make ends meet

New Jersey’s Toms River. Due to a $12.4 million budget deficit and uncertainty surrounding state financing, the Toms River Regional School District is considering selling district-owned land in North Dover. Officials are looking for ways to make ends meet.

As the district looks into selling the assets to raise money, district superintendent Mike Citta revealed that assessments have been done on 27 acres of land close to Joseph A. Citta Elementary School and additional property by Toms River High School East. Citta mentioned pending state legislation that would offer financial relief, saying, “We’re waiting and being as hopeful as we can.”

The district notes that the outcome of legislative initiatives is yet unknown and that the funding deficit is the result of state aid reductions in recent years. Estimates of the land’s value and prospective purchasers have not been made public by school officials.

Officials are also considering whether selling the assets would be a wise move in stabilizing the budget after the district’s financial difficulties necessitated considerable cost-cutting measures. Since the district is still keeping an eye on events in Trenton, no decisions have been made.

A number of New Jersey districts, including Toms River Regional, are having to make tough decisions in order to continue providing educational services and programs due to decreased state funding.
