Truck plunges off Arlington Memorial Bridge into Potomac River, one dead

Washington, D.C.An investigation is still underway after a sad incident on Thursday night pushed a pickup truck off the Arlington Memorial Bridge and into the Potomac River, killing one person.

The truck struck another car on the bridge on January 16th, causing the incident. According to the DC Fire and EMS Department, the truck broke through the concrete railing of the bridge during the collision and plunged into the river.

About 22 minutes later, rescue divers found the truck’s occupant after searching the water. With potentially fatal injuries, the person was rescued from the river and taken to a medical facility. The death was confirmed by the US Park Police on Friday morning. Authorities are looking into the possibility that there were more individuals inside the truck, although it is yet unclear if the casualty was the driver or a passenger.

Two occupants of the other car in the collision stayed on the bridge. One of them was hospitalized for treatment after suffering minor injuries.

While the investigation is ongoing, officials have not given a date for the Arlington Memorial Bridge’s reopening, and it is still closed.
