On Wednesday, President Trump announced that he had discussed the use of REAL cane sugar in American Coke with the Coca-Cola Company and that the company had agreed to start utilizing it. Coca-Cola declined to comment on whether it had consented to do so.
“We are grateful for President Trump’s passion for our beloved Coca-Cola brand,” Michelle Agnew, the spokesperson, said in a statement. We’ll be sharing more information shortly about our Coca-Cola product line’s unique new products.
High-fructose corn syrup, which Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has partially blamed for the obesity epidemic, was not included in Mr. Trump’s social media message. When asked if Coca-Cola had committed to using only sugar rather than corn syrup—which the corporation started utilizing in Coke in 1980 by mixing it with sugar to help offset the cost of growing sugar prices—Ms. Agnew did not answer.
Coca-Cola already produces Mexican Coke, often known as MexicanCoke, a soft drink sweetened with cane sugar. The drink, which has a cult-like following, was formerly brought into the US from Mexico by unlicensed independent merchants. However, in 2005, Coca-Cola started bringing Mexican Coke to Texas, progressively spreading its reach throughout the nation. Today, it can be found in bodegas and supermarkets in areas with a high Hispanic population.
For devout Jews who abstain from maize (and other grains), Coca-Cola also produces a Kosher-for-Passover version of the beverage, which comes in yellow-capped bottles and is prepared with sugar rather than corn syrup.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by the White House.
