ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. — Two Charlottesville men have been charged following a shooting incident near a playground on Peyton Drive last month that left property damaged but caused no injuries.
The Albemarle County Police Department responded to reports of gunfire on October 7 at approximately 4:20 p.m. Officers discovered evidence of gunfire, including a bullet lodged in a fence post surrounding a playground.
Jakai J. Mulford, 18, has been charged with attempted malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Rico L. Walker Jr., also 18, has been charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. Both individuals are being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
“This incident is gang related,” police said in a statement. While officials did not elaborate further, ACPD Captain Darrell Byers emphasized the department’s dedication to addressing gun violence, stating, “This is another example of how the Albemarle County Police Department is committed to seriously addressing gun violence crimes and bringing these cases forward for prosecution with urgency.”
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to gather additional details surrounding the incident.
