KEARNY, New Jersey. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday that two people have been charged in relation to a hit-and-run accident in Kearny in February that left a 67-year-old moped operator with potentially fatal injuries.
On December 2, Kearny residents Sergio Morocho, 35, and Sandra Morocho, 33, were taken into custody in Lyndhurst and Irvington, respectively. Sergio Morocho is accused of harming a child’s welfare, unlawfully taking a means of transportation, and willfully fleeing the scene of a car accident. Sandra Morocho is accused of obstructing and jeopardizing a child’s welfare. Both were set free until they appeared in court for the first time.
In the vicinity of Harrison Avenue and Bergen Avenue, a cargo vehicle collided with a motorbike on February 11 at around 10:15 p.m. The injured moped operator, a man from North Arlington, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after the van’s driver fled the scene. The abandoned cargo van was later found by police close to the scene of the collision.
The vehicle was driven by Sergio Morocho, who did not own it and was not permitted to use it, according to investigators. When the collision occurred, there were two youngsters in the back of the van who were not wearing seat belts. In an attempt to shield Sergio Morocho, authorities stated Sandra Morocho made up a story about being the driver.
The collision is still being looked at by the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit.
