The sale of body parts from dead people, including infants, was part of a troubling underground commerce that was made public by these specific incidents. Following a multi-year investigation that has found more offenses involving the trafficking of stolen human remains around the United States, the penalties provide some finality.
The Sentences and Crimes
For his role in the transportation of stolen human remains, Matthew Lampi, 50, of Minnesota, received a 15-month sentence in federal prison. Lampi received a jail sentence, a $2,000 fine, and an order to reimburse the mother of a stillborn child whose remains were sold illegally for $1,700. Lampi acknowledged buying stolen human remains from Pennsylvanian Jeremy Pauley, including the stillborn baby’s body.
According to the inquiry, Pauley had purchased the stolen remains from Candace Chapman Scott, a former worker at a mortuary and crematorium in Little Rock, Arkansas. The remains of two stillborn newborns and other donated cadavers intended for educational purposes were among the body parts that Scott had stolen from cadavers she was scheduled to cremate.
For years, Lampi and Pauley had been trading stolen remains, with over $100,000 worth of transactions.
In a another case, 39-year-old Kansas resident Angelo Pereyra was sentenced to 18 months in prison for trafficking and stealing human remains and body parts. As a pathology assistant at a hospital in Kansas from 2018 to 2022, Pereyra took organs, severed body parts, and even the remains of stillborn and aborted fetuses. After that, he sold these remnants to a Pennsylvanian named Andrew Ensanian.
The Stolen Remains
Disturbing activities during Pereyra’s crime spree included amputated feet and toes, as well as the theft of organs like hearts, livers, spleens, and even testicles.
While some of these body parts were stolen from living patients undergoing medical treatments, others were taken from people who had passed away. The illicit trade was further fueled when the stolen remains were sold to Ensanian in Pennsylvania.
The sad theft of stillborn kids’ bodies, which were supposed to be cremated and then given back to their bereaved families, was at the heart of Lampi’s case. The impacted families are deeply wounded emotionally by this violation of trust.
A Nationwide Investigation
The sentences follow a protracted investigation into the trafficking of stolen human remains, which was a component of a larger investigation that also included the well-known Harvard Medical School remains theft case. U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam referred to the offenses as “horrible” and denounced the trafficking and theft of human remains.
According to Karam’s statement, some crimes are incomprehensible. Human remains are stolen and trafficked, which goes right to the core of what makes us human. The fact that so many of the victims here willingly gave their bodies to be used to train medical professionals and further scientific and therapeutic goals is especially heinous. It is disgusting that they and their families are being exploited for financial gain.
Awaiting Sentencing
