The women spent a miserable night 50 feet below the ground, waiting for aid to arrive in the freezing circumstances at Black Diamond Ranch’s Quarry Course, where the daring rescue occurred.
Fall Into the Quarry
About 75 miles north of Tampa, at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida, on December 25, 2024, the incident took place. The woman fell into the limestone quarry below while they were strolling close to hole 17 on the Quarry Course.
The rescue teams had a hard time getting to the course because of its tricky layout, high drop-off, and rough terrain. Before being found the following morning, the women endured hours of being imprisoned in freezing temperatures.
A Challenging Rescue Operation
Citrus County Fire Rescue crews responded early on December 26 to the scene, describing the operation as challenging. The rescue crew and Black Diamond Ranch maintenance staff successfully completed a low-angle rescue despite bad weather that prevented helicopter backup.
“Despite bad weather that prevented air support, our hardworking crews, with the help of Black Diamond Ranch maintenance personnel, executed a successful low-angle rescue,” the fire department wrote in a statement posted on Facebook, praising the efforts of their team.
Both women were saved, stabilized, and taken to a trauma center in the area. Officials stated that they were in stable condition following their adventure, however they did not disclose the details of their injuries.
The Quarry Course: A Dangerous Setting
Famous golf architect Tom Fazio created the Quarry Course, which is recognized for its untamed and dramatic landscape. Citrus County is both aesthetically pleasing and possibly dangerous due to its sheer drop-offs and rolling hills, which contrast with much of Florida’s flat terrain. The course winds along the edge of an 80-foot-deep limestone quarry, which is encircled by rich tropical flora and large oak trees.
According to the Black Diamond Ranch website, holes 13 through 17 may be the most breathtaking golf holes this side of Pebble Beach since they straddle and round the rims of two valleys that are up to 80 feet deep.
