U-Haul Report Confirms More People Are Leaving New Jersey Than Coming

Phoenix, Arizona. According to a recent U-Haul research, more individuals are leaving New Jersey than returning, though it’s unclear if this is due to the state’s high taxes, high energy expenses, sanctuary for illegal immigrants, stringent nanny-state policies, or the state’s failing educational system.

Many attribute the enormous exodus from the Garden State on the policies of extreme progressive New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy and state Democrats.

According to U-Haul’s yearly Growth Index, which looks at one-way customer transactions to identify migration trends in the US and Canada, New Jersey is the 48th-fastest-growing state of 2024.

U-Haul reported that 48.1% of all one-way truck, trailer, and moving container traffic in and out of New Jersey featured arrivals, compared to 51.9% departures, which caused the state to drop one spot from its 2023 rating. According to year-over-year data, exits from New Jersey stayed constant while arrivals fell by 1%.

Every year, almost 2.5 million transactions are used to calculate the U-Haul Growth Index, which calculates the net profits or losses in one-way equipment moves. Texas, which had topped the rankings for years, lost to South Carolina for the top slot in 2024.

While places like Bayonne and Bloomfield were categorized as break-even markets with balanced arrivals and departures, New Jersey showed growth in a number of areas, including Bridgeton, Bridgewater Township, Cherry Hill Township, Glassboro, and Jersey City, despite its overall low ranking.

Oklahoma, Indiana, and Maine had the biggest increases in growth rankings, while California remained at the bottom for the fifth year in a row.
