UnitedHealthcare CEO fatally shot in midtown Manhattan, law enforcement official says

A law enforcement official tells CNN that UnitedHealthcare’s CEO was shot and murdered Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan.

In a suit and tie, Brian Thompson was making his way to the New York Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan to attend a UnitedHealthcare conference that was taking place in the ballroom.

Investigators tell CNN that a shooter who had been waiting for a while before Thompson arrived fired several shots from 20 feet away, hitting Thompson. According to the NYPD, the 50-year-old was shot in the chest and transported to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Investigators believe it looks to be a targeted shooting, while specifics are still unclear. According to the NYPD, the investigation is still underway and no arrests have been made.

UnitedHealthcare has been contacted by CNN for comment. In April of 2021, Thompson was appointed CEO of UnitedHealthcare. According to the business, UnitedHealthcare, a division of UnitedHealth Group, is rated fifth in the Fortune 500.

This tale is still in progress and will be updated.
