Used Car Scam Suspect Extradited to Placer County Jail After Arrest in Oklahoma

An individual implicated in widespread fraudulent automobile sales is currently incarcerated in a Placer County jail following his arrest in Oklahoma, as reported by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.

A series of fraudulent used automobile sales transactions in Northern California prompted several law enforcement organizations, including the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, to make cautionary statements to the public, urging them to exercise caution while purchasing pre-owned vehicles.

The detected fraudulent scheme involved the perpetrator specifically targeting sellers who were promoting their autos on reputable resale platforms.

Upon reaching the designated meeting place, the scammer would be accompanied by two associates who would conduct a “inspection” of the vehicle.

While one individual diverts the attention of the seller, the others deposit oil into the radiator and on the engine’s surface, deliberately inducing smoke during the test drive to create the illusion of an engine malfunction.

The purchaser then requests a very low selling price in order to remove the “problematic” vehicle from the seller’s possession.

At some point in the beginning of the year, several reports were received from citizens of Placer County detailing the same fraudulent scheme.

Inquiries revealed that Placer County was among a group of seven counties, spanning from San Diego County to El Dorado County, that were investigating the same fraudulent scheme.

Through additional inquiries conducted by the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, three suspects, namely Michael Tanase, Constatin Mustata, and Florin Tanase, have been identified.

Three charges of criminal vandalism and felony theft by false pretense were filed by the Placer County District Attorney’s Office against each of the accused.

Law enforcement officials from the Chickasaw Lighthorse Police Department apprehended Michael Tanase on July 23rd for his public intoxication and disruptive behavior. In addition, Tanase has engaged in a hit-and-run incident outside an Oklahoma casino.

Following his transfer from Love County, Oklahoma, Michael Tanase has been relocated to the South Placer Jail in Roseville.

Both Mustata and Florin Tanase are exceptional professionals.
