Rock County, Minnesota
—it’s a time to connect with the powerful legacy of those who’ve served. This year, as flags are raised and tributes are shared, a few special places in Rock County invite visitors to step into the past, honor stories of courage, and reflect on sacrifices made by local heroes.
From a striking bronze statue that stands watch on the courthouse lawn to immersive exhibits of Rock County’s military history, these sites offer a chance to experience the stories that shaped our community.
Rock County Veterans Memorial
Located on the lawn of the Rock County Courthouse, the Rock County Veterans Memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day in 2007. Funded by Warren Herreid II and Jeannine Rivet through their nonprofit foundation, KAHR, this 30-foot-wide memorial features an 18-foot black granite obelisk bearing the names of local veterans who gave their lives in service.
Five granite benches, arranged in a star pattern around the obelisk, provide a place for reflection. A bronze statue, affectionately named “Poppie,” honors the everyday soldier and sits atop one of the benches. Historic additions like a Civil War cannon enhance this memorial, making it a powerful site to honor veterans year-round.

Just blocks away, the Rock County Veterans Memorial Building invites visitors to explore military history up close. Once the Rock County Jail and Sheriff’s Residence, this century-old building was transformed in 2009 into a place dedicated to art, history, and the preservation of veterans’ stories.
Funded in part by the KAHR Foundation, the building now houses the Brandenburg Gallery, Herreid Military Museum, and Kahler Terrace, providing insight into the lives of Rock County citizens who served their country.
The museum collection spans from the Civil War through more recent conflicts, with exhibits featuring personal stories, restored artifacts, and even a life-sized military jeep.
