Virginia Beach, Virginia.Virginia Beach police said Wednesday that quick investigation and cutting-edge surveillance technology have led to the arrest and charging of a 22-year-old man in connection with an armed robbery on Lynnhaven Parkway.
The suspect is accused of firing a pistol inside a shop during the robbery, which took place in the 800 block of Lynnhaven Parkway on November 24 at around 9:37 a.m. Although no one was hit by the gunshots, the incident raised concerns and put workers in danger.
Detectives swiftly identified the offender by combining evidence from Flock license plate readers, city-owned surveillance systems, and home and business security cameras. On November 26, Dominique Leary, 22, of Virginia Beach, was taken into custody.
Leary is charged with a long list of offenses, such as armed robbery, armed burglary, carrying a handgun in public while a violent criminal, firing a firearm inside a structure, and shooting across a road. Additionally, he faces two counts of abduction and two counts of using a firearm to commit a felony.
VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate expressed gratitude to the many officers and detectives that put in countless hours to look into this case and swiftly capture a criminal who robbed and intimidated people of our community at their workplace. This is just one more instance of how camera technology—particularly license plate reader technology—helps us find and apprehend criminals who target our neighborhood.
Two days after the event, Leary was arrested, highlighting the importance of real-time technology in supporting law enforcement.
Surveillance technology is credited by Virginia Beach police with solving an armed robbery in less than 48 hours.
