Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to the Virginia Beach Police Department, a 17-year-old Virginia Beach resident was taken into custody on December 5 on suspicion of first-degree murder and using a handgun in the commission of a felony in relation to the shooting death of another 17-year-old.
This tragic instance is the sixth homicide involving young offenders that has occurred in Virginia Beach this year. According to authorities, 33.3% of victims were younger than 18, and 50% of killings in the city in 2024 were committed by minors. Authorities have recorded a number of non-fatal shootings involving minors, seven of which have been identified as victims and seven as perpetrators, in addition to fatal shootings.
The VBPD said, “These numbers should be distressing to our entire community,” highlighting the terrible effects of teenage gun violence. Officials asked parents to check their belongings, keep firearms out of reach, and have candid conversations about the repercussions of their behavior if they believe their children may have access to them.
Youth engagement in gun-related violence has become alarmingly common in the city, resulting in lost lives, broken futures, and distraught families. While urging a community-wide effort to address the underlying causes of teenage gun violence, local law enforcement is nonetheless looking into these instances.
