Virginia Winter Storm Warning: Heavy Ice & Snow to Impact Travel from Tuesday Morning to Wednesday Afternoon

Blacksburg, Virginia Beginning early Tuesday, a strong winter storm is expected to bring perilous road conditions, heavy snow, and substantial ice accumulation to southwest Virginia and portions of West Virginia. Through Wednesday, there will likely be extensive power outages and disruptions to travel.

The National Weather Service reports that ice accumulations may surpass a quarter-inch in certain places, while snow and sleet totals may approach six inches. Along the Blue Ridge, more ice is anticipated. Major roads, such as I-81 and U.S. 29, will be hazardous to travel on due to the storm, with the Tuesday morning and evening commutes being particularly risky.

Authorities advise locals to plan ahead for possible multi-day power outages and to avoid needless travel. Drivers should have emergency supplies, such as food, water, and a torch, if they must go.

The winter storm warning is still in force from Tuesday at 6 a.m. until Wednesday at noon. There’s a chance of further snow and freezing rain into Wednesday afternoon. Call 511 to stay informed about road conditions, and keep an eye out for any updates via local alerts.
