Trenton, New Jersey.U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said Thursday that a man from Monmouth County appeared in federal court to face charges in connection with an armed bank robbery in Wall Township.
Wall Township resident Jeffrey L. Kniffin, 50, is charged with robbing a nearby bank on October 23 while carrying a loaded gun. During his first court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Rukhsanah L. Singh, he was ordered to be jailed on one count of armed bank robbery. On November 25, there will be a hearing on detention.
According to court filings, Kniffin allegedly demanded money from a bank teller before pointing a gun and telling staff members, “Don’t do anything stupid.” He took more over $17,000 in cash and ran out of the bank, but police caught him a few minutes later. During his arrest, police allegedly found the loaded gun and the pilfered money.
The maximum penalty for armed bank robbery is 25 years in jail and a fine of $250,000. The Wall Township Police Department, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, and the FBI’s Jersey Shore Safe Streets Task Force are all investigating the matter.
The case is being prosecuted by Jonathan S. Garelick, Special Assistant U.S. Attorney. Kniffin is still being held while he awaits additional court hearings.
