LISLE, N.Y. — A box truck struck two New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) vehicles on Interstate 81 in Lisle on October 28, narrowly missing a DOT worker, New York State Police reported. The incident occurred around 11:51 a.m. near mile marker 22 as crews were conducting roadside maintenance.
According to the investigation, the driver of the box truck, identified as 36-year-old Muhammed A. Wesley from Phoenix, Arizona, was traveling north on I-81 in a Penske rental truck when he failed to observe a marked work area. Police said Wesley’s truck collided with a DOT attenuator and a small DOT dump truck that were parked on the shoulder with amber warning lights activated. A sign indicating “mowing ahead” was also posted to alert drivers to the work zone.
The DOT crew was in the area performing mowing and trash collection when the incident occurred. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the DOT worker who was nearly struck escaped harm.
State Police remind motorists of New York’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to use caution around stopped vehicles on the roadway. Drivers are urged to slow down and change lanes, if safe, when approaching emergency or maintenance vehicles on the shoulder.
